As part of my resolution to become a better photographer in 2008 I went out on a journey today to get all the supplies for a DIY light box. This was not actually my first attempt at building one... my first attempt will remain unmentionable... It was a disaster!
This time I did a bit of research first. I looked at examples and browsed many of the tutorials available online. Remembering my past experience and what I thought were the weak points of my previous light box building, I choose this tutorial. It's so straight forward and EASY PEASY. I literally finished this in 1/2 hour or less. It was simple and really effective. While I was out gathering I stopped to get a tripod for balance because I tend to get shaky camera hands.
The most important part to remember when doing this is to use the daylight bulbs and adjust the white balance settings on your camera so it picks up the right white.
I'm so excited to FINALLY have a working light box. I did a little photoshop work to my photos, but nothing compared with what I was doing sans light box. Now that I have this ready to go it'll make photographing all the items waiting to get in the shop easier, quicker, and much more enjoyable.
If you've been wanting to improve your item shots I strongly suggest trying this out!
Happy Wednesday Everyone!!

Jennalou

Wow, those look great. My Brother is a Photographer and he has a bunch of tutorials on his blog. I am not sure what techniques he outlines but you might find something you like or that is helpful: http://shaunkrisher.wordpress.com/
I love those wristlets!!!

Awesome! I made a light box, too, but I need better lighting for it.
That photo looks great!

How funny is that, I was just reading tutorials this morning trying to figure out how to do this!! :) The one that I found was NOT this good and it was teensy and a lot more work. Thanks SO much for sharing!! Here in frozen sunless MN these are a must for descent pics. Now if I could just make one big enough to stick the kids in to take shots of them! LOL

Thanks for sharing, great tutorial! I guess this is a silly question, but once you build the white light box, can you put other paper, fabric, etc. in there as a background for your smaller items or does it mess up the lighting/quality?
